U.S. Capitol Visitor Center
Join us for a free three-part program:
First, watch a documentary clip about Navajo Code Talkers from World War II. We will discuss their legacy, including the Congressional Gold Medal recognition many decades later.
Then, examine the model for Chief Standing Bear’s statue and learn more about the historic 1879 court case that ruled “an Indian is a person” under the law. The full-scale statue was unveiled in National Statuary Hall in 2019 and is one of two statues representing the state of Nebraska.
Last, take a guided tour of the U.S. Capitol focused on the ways America’s depictions of Indigenous peoples in Capitol art has evolved over time.
