The Reuben Gay Place, built in 1882, contributes to an understanding of the broad
patterns of history that shaped the African American farmer’s experience in rural
Fayette County after the Civil War. Its listing in the Georgia and National Registers of
Historic Places validates its historic significance to community building. This project will
be a reenactment highlighting the three courageous women who nurtured families,
tilled the soil and kept the farm thriving for 150 years. The women will tell their stories
in their own words clothed in period dresses as widows faced with unsurmountable
farm and family struggles.
