“The Negro Motorist Green Book” looks at the reality of travel for African Americans in mid-century America and how this annual guide served as an indispensable resource for the nation’s rising African American middle class. This special exhibit includes artifacts from business signs and postcards to historic footage, images and firsthand accounts to convey not only the apprehension felt by African American travelers, but also the resilience, innovation and elegance of people choosing to live a full American existence.
The Carter Library will also celebrate Juneteenth with a Family Event on Saturday, June 15th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Join us for free activities in our lobby, theater presentations, and outdoor activities!
